Flamingo

The Red Book Animal

Nutrition
various aquatic invertebrates

Habitat area
in South America, along the shores of lakes
Interesting facts:
- Their beautiful color comes from the algae, diatoms, and small crustaceans they eat, which are rich in carotene.
- Flamingos tend to preen themselves, which takes a significant amount of time every day. They preen themselves using their beak, which distributes fat from the iron at the base of their tail onto their feathers.
- In contrast to their appearance, they are surprisingly good swimmers. Their webbed feet help them swim and stand in the soft mud.
- Flamingos can fly, but they need a little run to get off the ground. During flight, they stretch their long necks and legs in one straight line.
