Meet our cougar Hangira in the photo!
She came to us from Karaganda in April 2017 as part of an animal exchange program between zoos.
Interesting facts:
- The cougar is the second largest member of the felidae family in America. The only one bigger than her is the jaguar
- All cougars lead a solitary lifestyle, with the exception of females with cubs or during the mating season.
- Baby cougars are born spotted
- Cougar milk is 6 times fatter than cow's milk
- Cougars have special bumps on their tongue, with which they tear off small pieces of meat from their prey.
- Cougar cubs never come out of hiding until their mother calls them.
- Cougars are the only large monophonic cats on the American continent
- To survive, one cougar needs to eat 860-1300 kg of meat per year, which is about 45-50 ungulates.
- The female communicates with her offspring using sounds similar to bird chirping.
- Cougars living in the southern regions of America often attack alligators and sometimes kill individuals twice their size.
- Wolves, bears and jaguars are the most dangerous enemies of cougars
- Cougars live for about 8-13 years both in nature and in captivity.
